CARRIE Jones could barely contain her emotion after her goal sealed Wales a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland and a place at next year's European Championships.

The Newtown raised 21 year old was almost lost for words during her interview following full-time in Dublin on Tuesday night.

She said: "I am so happy, we have worked so, so hard and now we just want to enjoy this.

"Hopefully little girls watching tonight are inspired and know they can play for Wales. For me all the sacrifices and hard work has paid off."

(Image: Phil Blagg) The former Manchester United forward and current Norrkoping player based in Sweden became teary as she thought of her celebrating family back home in Mochdre near Newtown.

"They are going to be so happy for me at home," said Jones.

Mother Joyce, a former County Times photographer, shared her pride as her daughter entered the history books.

"Oh my word," said Joyce. "We didn’t sleep much, just buzzing and so so happy for her.

"She has sacrificed so much growing up. No parties, training constantly, giving it her all. She deserves this moment, as so do the team. Absolutely amazing. No words."

He said: "Carrie was always a pleasure to coach with a fantastic attitude and work ethic. It is no surprise you’ve got to where you are today. Last night was the icing on the cake. Well done and enjoy the success."
