CALLUM McKenzie has been appointed manager of Newtown.

McKenzie returns to Montgomery Waters Latham Park having previously served as assistant to the successful Chris Hughes who departed following a golden era earlier in the year.

Successor Scott Ruscoe parted ways with the JD Cymru Premier side last month following a disastrous campaign which saw the Robins crash out of the JD Welsh Cup to third tier minnows Llanuwchllyn.

McKenzie will be assisted by club legend Craig Williams who has returned from JD Cymru North side Caersws following an 18 month spell with the Bluebirds.

A club statement read: "Newtown AFC are delighted to confirm Callum McKenzie as their new first team head coach.

"Callum has been in interim charge of the first team since November 5th having previously been with the club in various capacities including assistant manager and technical director.

"We can also confirm Craig Williams will return from Caersws as Callum's assistant.

Craig Williams has returned to Newtown. (Image: Archive.) "Craig is no stranger to Latham Park either, currently being head of Newtown AFC's academy and also an extremely popular former player who amassed more than 500 appearances during his previous time with the club.

"In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Craig will also be registered as a player in January, bringing a wealth of vital experience to the dressing room.

"Additionally Craig will remain in his role with the club's academy, providing an extremely useful link between the first team and the academy."

The appointments were backed by Newtown chief executive officer Paul Wetton who described the duo as "the two best football coaches I have ever had the privilege to work with."

He added: "The level and quality of applicants for the head coach role were outstanding, however, Callum was by far the best candidate.

"To add Craig to the equation is also a major coup for the club as, not only is he a first rate coach who already has a close and effective working relationship with Callum, but is also opens the door to the return of a Newtown playing legend who will provide an experienced head in the dressing room and an additional option on the field.

"The fact his appointment also cements the pathway for our players from academy to first team is also a huge benefit."

Meanwhile Williams thanked Caersws Football Club for making him part of the Bluebirds' family.

"I would like to place on record my thanks to everyone at Caersws Football Club for the time I have had there over the past 18 months.

"It has been a great experience for me not only playing but helping out in a coaching capacity too.

"The people at the club, not only the players but everyone behind the scenes make the club a special one and one which myself and family have really enjoyed.

"I am gutted to be leaving but I am excited for my next chapter which is a big one for me personally. I wish the club nothing but the best going forward."
