Two Maldwyn Harriers represented Wales at the SIAB Track and Field International this month.

Madison Hughes and Max Evans are pupils of Llanidloes High School.
SIAB pits the best Welsh schools U17 athletes against those from England, Scotland and Ireland and is the top tier of schools athletics competition in the UK.

Max Evans, in his first year in this age group, achieved a rare sprint double victory by winning the 100m in a time of 10.84s, and the 200m in 21.43s (a new PB).

His 200m time takes him to third in the UK rankings for the year so far. He capped off the day in the 4x100m relay team to win a third gold.

He was also awarded Welsh Boy Athlete of the Day for his performances.

Madison Hughes was selected for 3000m, and came seventh in a strong field, a year young in this competition, in a time of 10:24.40s.

Coach Owen Chesher of Maldwyn Harriers said: “Max and Maddie have achieved so much already this season, but to perform in a Welsh vest is always special.

“They’ve represented their country again with the fantastic attitude and commitment that brought them to this level, and it was fantastic to see them perform. The club congratulates you both.”

Meanwhile Welshpool raised Adele Nicoll is the English shot put champion once again with a golden throw of 17.11m.

The Birchfield Harrier said: “With full commitments to bobsleigh training and work events, I’ve only managed one throwing session in the past two weeks. Today was about executing things better than at the British Championships and that’s what I did.

“The ability to discipline yourself to delay instant gratification in order to enjoy greater rewards in the long term, is the indispensable prerequisite for success.”
