On Saturday, I watched my local football team, Hyde United, play a pre-season friendly at their Ewen Fields ground against Newtown AFC.
Normally, I would want Hyde to win, but on this occasion I had mixed loyalties: from 1992-98 I was deputy head of Newtown High School and lived in Bettws Cedewain.
The game ended in a 1-0 Newtown win, and it could have been more.

Newtown have a no-nonsense, fast and aggressive style, but with plenty of skill.
Their defence is resolute and uncompromising, with an outstanding goalkeeper who brilliantly saved a Hyde penalty, and a very good, strong and direct centre forward, who scored the winning goal and was a threat throughout the match.
If the game can be regarded as a marker for the coming season, Newtown will do extremely well in the League of Wales whilst Hyde will struggle in their division.
At the end of the game the crown of 290, high for a friendly fixture, applauded both teams off the pitch.
Just a shame that, from my point of view, the match couldn’t have ended in a draw!
