JOHNNY Williams emerged the hero as Llandrindod Wells ended a 10 year wait to get their hands on the Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup, with a 1-0 Easter Monday victory over Hay St Marys.
Builth Wells Football Club’s Lant Field hosted the encounter, which saw underdogs Hay play their part in a competitive final.
Ben Jones headed over in the Spamen’s best chance of the first-half.
However Hay came closest to leading with Tom Weaver’s deflected shot forcing an outstanding save from goalkeeper Adam Wright.
Llandrindod led before the hour with Williams heading home Robbie Nicholls’ cross.
Nicholls had a chance to double the Llandrindod lead minutes later, but sliced wide.
At the other end Wright came to the rescue to deny Sam Bradley, after a superb run from Jake Atkinson, while Chris Preece’s looping header was also tipped away by the Spa No1.
Llandrindod Wells manager Nigel Thomas said: “It was a hard fought final but one we deserved to win.
“I am delighted for the players and supporters, because the Radnorshire Cup is a great trophy to win.
“We had not won this famous trophy for a decade before this season, so this win has been a long time coming.”
Thomas added: “It has been a good season for the club, the second division of the Mid Wales League is a good standard and we are enjoying our football.”
