WELSHPOOL Town Football Club’s new junior pitches will be named in honour of one of the club’s greatest ever players.
The new facility is close to completion and it has been confirmed will be named the Wayne Evans Playing Fields in memory of the former club legend who passed away earlier in the summer.
Evans began his career with Welshpool Town and would enjoy a professional career with spells at Walsall and Rochdale before embarking on a coaching career in the USA.
Club secretary Eva Bredsdorff said: “A lot of hard work has gone into getting them to this stage and to make the area as user-friendly as possible. Goals have been installed and the pitches will be line-marked in the next couple of days.

“The official opening of the new pitches will take place on Sunday, September 3rd and is for officials, players and coaches from the club as well as invited guests. At this occasion the board with the name of the new pitches will be revealed.
“In honour of the late Wayne ‘Wanners’ Evans – they will be called the Wayne Evans Playing Fields – a fitting tribute to a local football legend.
“Finally, the developments of the new pitches could not have been achieved without the drive and hard work of Paul Coackley and the financial support from the UK Government Wales, the Cymru Football Foundation, Sport Wales and Powys County Council. The club is most grateful to these organisations as well as to our sponsors: Alexanders, BML-Hayley, Craven Electrical, Derwen Tooling Ltd, Gwilt & Son, Invertek, Lizard Technology, Lovatt Brothers Ltd, Plum Logo Group, Sterling Mortgages, Vyrnwy Caravans Ltd and Welshpool Printing Group."
