NEWTOWN'S Dolerw Park once again set the stage for a round of the North Wales Cross Country Championships last weekend.

The iconic venue had not been used for a round since 1992.

However Saturday saw the return of athletes from clubs hailing from across north Wales and the borders after a three decade absence.

Among the best represented was the Newtown based Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club who hosted the event.

A spokesperson said: "The club was very grateful to the large number of volunteers that helped make the day such a success.

"There were a number of debut appearances from our primary school group and some really good performances from both juniors and seniors.

"We had a large number of clubs in attendance from all over north Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire.

"Hopefully this will put Newtown on the map and people will return as visitors.

"We are very grateful of the support from Open Newtown with the use of the park which was in perfect condition for the races."

Chris Benson ended ninth in the under 15s boys race while Maddie Hughes won the under 15s girls race with Mackenzie McCourt third.

Olivia Morgan ended sixth while Chardonnay Morgan ended in 16th spot.

Nansi Evans ended seventh in the under 13s girls class while Maisie Love was 17th.

Henry Rowlands was the top Harrier in the under 13s boys race in third spot while Oskar Ledger-Muennich was sixth and Rhydian Freeman ended 10th.

Rosie Pritchard ended ninth in the under 11s girls race with Chloe Lloyd ending 11th and Enya Rees 12trh and Martha Fychan 13th while Lenka Davies completed Harrier interest in 15th.

Deri McCluseky won the under 20s men's race having ended second overall.

The Harriers dominated the under 17s boys race with Aled Breeze first while Callum Morgan was third with Finlay Cullen fourth and Matthew Benson fifth respectively.

Maddie Griffiths was second in the under 17s girls race while Olivia Garrod was 10th and Carys Breeze 11th.

Ffion Price ended third in the senior women's race while Nesta McCluskey ended 30th overall.

Meanwhile the club was well represented in the senior men's race and led home by Clive Morgan in 17th.

Charlie Edwards ended 27th while further down the field Ryan McCluskey, Gary Jones, Gary Jerman and Jamie Mayers completed the club's interest while Chris Copus ended 16trh in the men's over 65s race.
