DERI McCluskey further highlighted his emergence as one of Britain’s most promising triathletes with a bronze medal at the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira in Portugal last weekend.

The Llanymynech raised former Llanfyllin High School student led home the British contingent with a third placed finish in 00:55:05 in the junior men’s class.

The Maldwyn Harrier Athletics Club star completed a 750m swim in 00:08:47 - one of the fastest in the field - before completing a 20.1km cycle ride in 00:29:02 and crossed the line after completing the 5k run in 00:15:57.

The race was won by Izan Edo Aguilar of Spain in 00:54:47.

The 19 year old is a student at Cardiff University and member of the National Triathlon Performance Centre.

Llanidloes athlete Maddie Hughes represented Wales and helped the middle girls to team bronze with a top 20 finish.

Hughes was not the only representation from Powys with Ffion Price of Ysgol Canol Cymru also travelling as part of the Welsh coach and management team.

Price is a former Welsh international and was among the top long distance talents in the country during her teenage years and is now shaping the careers of the next generation.
