YOUNG rugby players from mid and South Powys will compete at next year’s Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens.

Pupils from Ysgol Calon Cymru with campuses in Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells, will send three sides to the world’s largest and most famous schools’ rugby festival.

Following the success of the under 13s boys side in the competition last year, Calon Cymru will now have three teams competing with the under 13s boys, under 14s boys and under 14s girls in action.

An Ysgol Calon Cymru spokesman said: “This is the first time we have entered this many teams but importantly the first time a girls’ team is playing.

From its humble beginning in 1939, the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens has evolved into the world’s largest school rugby tournament with over 10,000 boys and girls aged between 11 and18 competing annually.

Originally it was a knock-out competition for public schools but as interest grew it was extended to include grammar, comprehensive and preparatory schools.

The under 13s boys have been drawn to play Caterham School, Lancaster Royal Grammar School, RGS Worcester and Yarm School of England as well as fellow Welsh school Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun.

The girls under 14s side will play Cardinal Newman School, Hill House School and Perse School while the under 14s boys team take on Westcliff High School, Wycliffe College and Tredegar Comprehensive.
