The new owner of one of Welshpool’s oldest pub has said she is “really pleased” with the results six months on.

Having bought The Talbot, on Welshpool's High Street, in April 2024, new owner Michelle Youens spoke about the changes she’s made to the 16th century pub and how the experience has been.

She re-opened the pub after an extended closure while it was on the market for several months, struggling to find a buyer and eventually having its price slashed. Having re-opened in April, several changes have been carried out in the pub.

She said: “All the changes we made were done gradually so the pub could stay open even as we were renovating much of it. We’ve done plenty of work throughout, but we were never closed while that was happening.

“In terms of the work, there wasn’t a huge amount do to. It mainly involved lots of cleaning and painting to make the whole place look nice again, but nothing major.

“We were lucky in that there weren’t any serious problems or essential repairs to do. Everything we’ve had to do was done gradually, but it felt like everything just fell into place at the right time.”

The pub also hosts monthly pool competitions made up of 32 players, but in December will be welcoming 64 players for a doubles tournament.

Some of the internal changes include new flooring and carpets, log fires, new benches outside and a fresh coat of paint throughout the pub. They have also installed an outside bar for busier summer months, where the pub plans to host live music performances as often as possible.

Ms Youens added: “I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out, a cozy pub surrounded by fabulous locals.

"I was worried I’d have trouble when I first took the pub on, but it’s all been great so far, despite the hard work it’s taken to get to this point.

“I realised how much this old pub was missed by the town when I announced I’d bought it. There were so many comments from people glad to see it back and happy someone else was giving it a chance.”
