An artist led independent gallery will be holding the grand opening at their new permanent home in Llanfyllin town square.

Llanfyllin mayor, Cllr Peter Jones, said he was “really looking forward” to opening a new independent gallery in the town square on Saturday, November 30, in what he hopes will be a “showcase” for the town’s art scene.

The project has been put together by Awen, an artist led independent art and crafts gallery dedicated to featuring the best of the burgeoning art scene within Wales, who have now settled on Llanfyllin for their long-term residence.

The project had previously run a series of open studios, which Cllr Lewis added that Llanfyllin Town Council had shown support for, eventually moving into Glasgow House on Narrow Street when the premises became available.

Cllr Lewis said: “It’s a fantastic feature for the town, a showcase for the many talented artists we have in the town and a good way to put Llanfyllin’s arts scene in the map in a meaningful way with its own permanent base.

“I know that they’ve been looking for a permanent home for a few years, having been running open studios for a while with the support of the town council, and the ideal space came along at the right time for them.

“I think it’s ideal that the gallery be right in the town square, in full view for residents and tourists and adding to what it can offer as a cultural hub, with no boarded up or empty shops in the centre of town.

“I’m really looking forward to the opening and to the future of the gallery in town, offering a permanent place for what Llanfyllin has to offer and what it can showcase.”

Awen have said they plan to feature a regular stock of art and artisan crafts, as well as a programme of eight exhibitions per year mirroring the eight-fold Druidic year.

The project will start with the Arthan Alban exhibition which is a group show highlighting the quality of works emerging in the locale and further afield.

They will reportedly have selections of modern and contemporary artworks, traditional instrument making, fine woodwares, traditional baskets, artist’s books and cards while the lower level will offer vinyl records, a record cleaning service, books, ephemera and by-gones from design classics to curios.

The opening will be held on Saturday, November 30, from 6pm to 9pm.
