A petition calling for another general election in the UK has more than 2.6 million signatures (at the time of writing).

The petition, which can be found on the UK Government and Parliament website, calling for another election was launched by West Midlands pub landlord Michael Westwood.

Mr Westwood, in the petition, says: "I would like there to be another General Election.

"I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election."

More than 10,000 people in Powys have signed the petition calling for another general election (see the breakdown below).

It's not just residents in the UK that have signed the petition, but people from overseas too including America and France.

It's even caught the attention of world-renowned businessman Elon Musk, who shared the petition on X (formerly Twitter) claiming “the people of Britain have had enough of a tyrannical police state”.

The petition can be found on the UK Government and Parliament website and is open for signatures until May 2025.

How many people in Powys have signed the petition calling for a General Election?

So far, more than 2.6 million people have signed the petition (at the time of writing) calling for another general election.

More than 10,000 of those signatures have come from electorates in North Wales:

  • Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr - 5,185 (5.3% of 97,800 constituents)
  • Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe - 5,553 signatures (5.9% of 93,200 constituents)

A further 4,032 people have signed the petition in the Ceredigion Preseli electorate (held by Plaid Cymru), which is 4.2% of the 93,800 constituents.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer rules out general election

Despite the petition, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out calling another general election.

But the Prime Minister said he is “not surprised” some people might want a second poll.

Asked about the petition on ITV’s This Morning on Monday (November 25), Sir Keir said: “Look, I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election.

“I’m not surprised that many of them want a re-run. That isn’t how our system works.

“There will be plenty of people who didn’t want us in, in the first place.

“So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day.”
