Three people were rescued from floodwaters by firefighters from Llanfyllin in the aftermath of Storm Bert hitting Powys.

Even in the aftermath of the storm roads were still flooded, leading to a rescue team being called out to incidents on Monday.

On Monday, November 25, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue crew members from Llanfyllin Fire Station and Welshpool Fire Station were called out to an incident in Llandrinio, near Llanymynech, at 12.30pm.

Two vehicles had become stuck in floodwater, with three people stuck in one of the cars. Fire crews from both stations were able to rescue the car’s occupants by using wading equipment and a rescue sled, an inflatable craft that assist with retrieving a casualty from a water-rescue situation.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue said: “At 12.30pm on Monday, November 25, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crews from Welshpool and Llanfyllin Fire Stations were called to an incident in Llanymynech.

“Crews responded to two private motor vehicles stuck in floodwater.  Crews rescued three occupants from one of the vehicles using wading equipment and one rescue sled.  Crews left the scene at 1.52pm.

“Following this incident, MAWWFRS is urging road users to adhere to informative and warning signs placed on roads, whether they are temporary or not, and to never attempt to drive nor walk through floodwater.

“Floodwater can often be much deeper and faster flowing than it appears.  More safety information on driving in heavy rain can be found on the Fire and Rescue Service’s website.”

The incident came after a busy weekend for the Llanfyllin Station, who responded to other issues with flooding as Storm Bert reached Mid Wales.

On Saturday crews responded to a call of water entering a house near Llanrhaedr. Crews pumped water from the yard and put sandbags against doors at 3.50pm. They were then mobilised to a Llanrhaedr property in imminent danger of flooding at 5.29pm.

Later that same day, at 6.27pm, crew members responded to one private motor vehicle stuck in floodwater. The vehicle’s occupants had already made their way out of the vehicle, while firefighters were involved in placing traffic tape on both sides of the highway and assisted with removing personal belongings from the vehicle.
