Fire services in Powys made several rescues over the weekend as the county was hit by wind and rain from Storm Bert.

Fire stations from across Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were on alert for incidents throughout the county as Storm Bert brought heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday, November 23, and Sunday, November 24.

Dyfed Powys Police issued a warning to motorists during the weekend to take caution due to “extremely poor” conditions from Storm Bert.

The first major callout came on Saturday, at 6.18pm as crew members from Welshpool Fire Station was called to a vehicle stuck in floodwater in Llangynog.

Fire crews  stopped other cars from entering the flooded section of road and helped remove personal belongings from the trapped vehicle, while everyone inside the car had already made their way to safety.  

Describing the incident, a Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service spokesperson said: “The vehicle’s occupants had already made their way out of the vehicle, crew members were involved in placing traffic tape on both sides of the highway and assisted with removing personal belongings from the vehicle.”

On Sunday, the Welshpool crew received another call of a vehicle stuck in floodwater, this time closer to home as the incident was along the A490 in Welshpool.

The fire service received the call at 12.24pm and used a rescue sled to investigate the incident.

A spokesperson added: “The crew responded to one private motor vehicle in floodwater, crew members utilised a rescue sled to investigate the vehicle.  The owner of the vehicle presented at the scene and was safe and well.  No further action was required by crew members.”

Later that day, crews from Montgomery and Welshpool rescued a casualty from a flooded vehicle at 7.52pm in Montgomery.  

According to Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescuer: “At 7.52pm on Sunday, November 24th, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Montgomery and Welshpool Fire Stations were called to an incident in Montgomery.

“Crews were involved in rescuing one casualty from a flooded vehicle.”
