KNIGHTON’S annual carnival is under serious threat of disappearing from the town’s calendar, after no new volunteers turned up to the AGM this week.
Knighton Show and Carnival reported that “not one new person” turned up to the annual meeting, held on Thursday evening, November 21.
This has led to the carnival committee announcing that next year’s event will not have a horticultural or crafts section.
The future of the carnival as a whole also looks severely bleak, as the 2025 spectacle is the final one being run by the current committee.
“We held our carnival AGM last night and although we are eternally grateful for our stalwart committee and volunteers who are there at every single occasion giving their time freely – even giving up paid days of work to do so – we were severely disappointed that not one new person turned up to support us,” carnival secretary Louise Hardwick wrote in a post on the event’s Facebook page.

“With this in mind we have come to the decision that the 2025 carnival will NOT have a horticultural/crafts section in the hall, unless volunteers come forward in the next month to take on the role of hall committee members.
“In addition to this 2025 will be our final year as the current committee. If additional volunteers don’t step forward to take this on then the current trustees will look to dissolve the charity accordingly with the 2025 show and carnival being the last.”
Carnival organisers first hinted in October that the future of the summer showpiece was in jeopardy, if more volunteers were not willing to come forward.
The committee says it is “desperate” for more bodies, and that new volunteers need only commit to an hour a month in order to attend meetings, and keep the popular August spectacle going.
“This is not a decision which has been made without much stress and anguish, but after assessing the time we have already committed over the many years and no further support appearing our hands are forced,” continued the committee’s statement this week.
“We are a welcoming group of individuals who are on hand to support any new committee members or trustees.
“Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month, barring December. They last about 1 hour and then the show and carnival event plus bonfire and firework night.
“We are happy to support new volunteers in learning the ropes. If anyone is interested in securing the future of the show, it is imperative that you reach out in the next month so that we can plan accordingly.”
