Plans to restore a fish pass on the River Usk have been revealed.

Natural Resources Wales's (NRW) Four Rivers for LIFE Project has announced plans to install a new fish pass for smolts on Brecon Weir in the summer of 2025.

The new pass will help salmon and other fish species move freely past the weir, aiding their downstream migration to the sea.

The project team will hold a drop-in session on Thursday, December 5, between 2pm and 4pm at Y Gaer on Glamorgan Street in Brecon to discuss the proposals.

Susie Kinghan, Four Rivers for LIFE project manager, said: "Smolts migrate downstream to the sea in spring, and in years when spring flows are low they have experienced difficulty passing over Brecon weir.

"Salmon and other fish in the river are now struggling and are at risk of becoming extinct in Wales.

OTHER NEWS:

"This new smolt fish pass will ensure that young fish are able to travel downstream during important stages of their life cycle."

The new fish pass will complement the existing Larinier fish pass on the weir, ensuring that fish can pass the structure on both their upstream and downstream migrations.

Brecon Weir is currently recognised as a significant obstruction to migrating fish swimming downstream.

Recent studies have recorded shoals of smolts trapped above the weir, especially in low flows, delaying their migration and making them vulnerable to disease and predation.

Members of the community are invited to attend the drop-in event on Thursday, December 5, between 2pm and 4pm at Y Gaer, Glamorgan Street, Brecon, LD3 7DW.
