The opening of the inquests of the two men who died in a crash on the A5 near Oswestry has heard they died after a head on collision.

In the opening hearing at Shrewsbury Coroner’s Court today (November 21) it was heard that John Breese, 33, from Meifod and John Moore, 81, from Shrewsbury both died at the scene of a crash.

The court heard that both Mr Breese, who worked as a farmer, and Mr Moore, a retired teacher, were travelling on the A5 between the Mile end and Wolfshead roundabouts when they were involved in a collision on Sunday (November 17).

What happens at an inquest and what can the press report?

Reporting on inquests is one of the most difficult jobs faced by any journalist, but there are important reasons why local newspapers attend coroner’s court hearings and report on proceedings.

Here we will try and answer some of your questions about what will happen, what can be reported and why.

According to the opening statement read to the court Mr Moore who was travelling in a Peugeot had a head on collision with Mr Breese who was travelling in a Renault van at the time.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene to treat both men but despite the best efforts of paramedics both men were declared dead at the scene of the crash.

The opening statement was heard by Assistant Coroner Heath Westerman who adjourned the inquest into the death of both men for them to be heard at separate hearings on March 27 next year while evidence surrounding the incident is examined.
