A petition set up with the aim of saving Machynlleth’s leisure centre from closure has gained over 1,000 signatures in one week.

As Powys County Council unveiled options that are under consideration about the future of its 14 leisure centres, Machynlleth residents have launched a petition to draw attention to how widely used the town’s leisure centre is.

The petition, launched on November 11, has been signed by more than 1,800 people, with more than 1,000 of those signatures being made in the first week.

The petition states: “We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and supporters of Machynlleth, call on decision-makers to take immediate action to secure the future of Machynlleth Leisure Centre, an essential facility that serves as a hub for health, well-being, and community connection in our town and surrounding areas.

“The leisure centre provides vital facilities for physical exercise and mental well-being for people of all ages and abilities. It supports residents in maintaining healthy lifestyles, which is especially critical in rural areas with limited alternatives.

“From swimming lessons for children to exercise classes for older adults, the centre is a place where people from all walks of life come together. It is not just a leisure facility but a cornerstone of community life.

“The leisure centre plays a crucial role in supporting schools, youth groups, and local sports teams by providing a space for training, education, and recreational activities.

“As a destination for visitors, the leisure centre contributes to the local economy by attracting families, tourists, and event attendees to Machynlleth. The leisure centre is essential for annual events such as the Machynlleth Comedy Festival.”

One of the council’s options for the future of several centres across the county could mean that leisure centres and dry facilities in smaller towns, such as Machynlleth, could close or be transferred to the community or businesses.

If a report and its options are approved by Powys County Council's Cabinet later this month, a consultation will take place in 2025.

The petition, which can eb found here, added: “The closure or reduction of services at Machynlleth Leisure Centre would have far-reaching consequences.

“Increased isolation and reduced opportunities for physical activity, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, children, and those with disabilities.

“Negative impacts on the health and well-being of residents, leading to increased strain on local healthcare services and the loss of a vital facility that supports the town's attractiveness to new residents and businesses.”
