The Welshpool Rotary club has donated 10 large boxes of unwanted bras to a recycling charity.

The bras were collected from the Against Breast Cancer Bra Bin at Morrisons in Welshpool.

They were sent to a recycling company in the UK, which sorts and sends them to Africa.

The scheme helped keep expensive textiles out of landfill and raised money for the charity, Against Breast Cancer.

Welshpool Rotary said the bras were recycled to the 'value of the textile of £700 per tonne'.

Some of the bras will be resold in countries such as Togo, Ghana, and Kenya, providing small businesses for women to support their families.

The bras which cannot be resold are broken down and recycled as cotton waste and metal.

Welshpool Rotary project lead, Mike Lade, said: "We are very thankful to Morrisons and the local ladies for supporting this initiative and getting behind what we are trying to achieve.

"It will be good to get the space back in my shed.

"Sadly, we had to stop the collecting rather abruptly after receiving notice from Against Breast Cancer that there had been a hic-cup with the recycling company and that all collections had to stop.

"Things have been resolved now and we hope to start again with the pink bin in Morrisons in the spring."
