A new windfarm with over 200 metre high turbines could be built on the Powys-Wrexham border near Oswestry.

A new plan has been put forward by Galileo empower have put plans forward for a new site with 21 wind turbines that will have “a maximum height to blade tip of 230m”.

The Mynydd Mawr Energy Park will have would be “situated in the north east of Powys and southern part of Wrexham County Borough Council".

“The focus area of the site for the renewable energy development is situated 3km east of Llanrhaeadr – ym-Mochnant and 1.5km south of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog.”

According to the company the boundaries of the site will be “8km to the west of Oswestry, 5km to the north of Llansilin, 4km to the south west of Craignant, 2.5km to the north west of Rhydycroesau.”

Given the size of the energy park it will classed as a Development of National Significance (DNS) under the Planning (Wales) Act 2015, meaning the final decision will be made by the Welsh Government.

Galileo Empower have announced that there will be three meetings for public consultation coming up this month, however there has been disquiet about after it was revealed that there has been no dates in Powys.

Councillor Aled Davies who was made aware of the plans earlier this week said he was “deeply frustrated” that residents in Powys would likely have to travel to Oswestry to ask questions about the development.

“The impact is on Wrexham and quite a bit on the Powys side. There is nothing in Llanrheaedr, Llansilin or Llangedwyn but there is two in Shropshire which is not quite so heavily impacted,” said Cllr Davies.

He drew a distinction with how Natural Resources Wales had recently run consultations for a new National Park which he said had been productive.

“Things can be arranged if there is a willingness on both sides and it seems as if this company is not willing to do so,” added Cllr Davies.

“There are potentially people in favour of the scheme and people against it but everyone needs a greater understanding of where those massive 230 metres turbines will be and how they will be transported – they are far bigger than anything we have seen locally.”

Upcoming public meetings will be held by Galileo Empower a the following dates:

  • Wednesday 27 November 2024 | 3:00pm – 8:00pm | Llanarmon Centenary Hall, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llangollen LL20 7LD
