Multiple fire crews have been tackling a blaze at an office building in Crickhowell town centre this afternoon (Monday, November 11).

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of smoke coming from a window in an upstairs property in Crickhowell just after midday on Monday.

The main A40 road passing through Crickhowell was reported to have been closed for a time, but it is now believed it has reopened.

Images posted on social media showed firefighters and two fire engines outside estate agents Clee Tompkinson & Francis, next to The Bear hotel, on High Street, Crickhowell.

“At 12.21pm on Monday, November 11, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crew from Crickhowell Fire Station, assisted by crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, was called to an incident on High Street in Crickhowell,” said the fire service in a statement.

“Crews responded to a fire on the first floor of a two-storey commercial building measuring approximately 10metres by 10metres. 

“Crews utilised four breathing apparatus sets, two hose reel jets, one safety jet, thermal imaging cameras, cutting gear and one positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the property. 

“Every floor of the building was checked for hot spots by crews and firefighters delivered fire safety information to neighbouring properties.

“The road was closed while the incident was ongoing. Dyfed-Powys Police was also in attendance. Crews left the scene at 2.41pm.”

 Witnesses described seeing smoke coming from the top left window, above Clee Tompkinson & Francis.

Video showed firefighters outside the office, while cars were at a standstill, as firefighters and police dealt with the incident.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it assisted with a road closure in Crickhowell around 1.35pm on Monday.

"Police supported Mid and West Wales Fire Service, who were attending a property fire on the High Street," said the force.

"The road reopened a short time after."

Abergavenny fire destroys buildings

The incident comes a day after a devastating fire ripped through a shop and several buildings in Abergavenny on Sunday night – leading to residents being evacuated and buildings destroyed.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the large town centre blaze, with around 14 fire crews called to the scene on Frogmore Street, Abergavenny, at about 8.35pm.

The Magic Cottage charity shop and other nearby buildings have been destroyed and a building remained alight on Monday morning, but no injuries have been reported.

Some residents were evacuated to Abergavenny Leisure Centre.
