A popular village pub and hotel could be adding a a village shop with Post Office services to its premises.

The Lion Hotel in Llandinam could also be adding additional accommodation, according to a planning application submitted to Powys County Council.

The hotel which dates back to the 1700s has been recently renovated and the plans put forward would see an extension to the current building.

It was most recently used as Jo's at The Lion café which closed on October 27.

In the design and access statement, put forward by Halls on behalf of the hotel's owners, the proposal will the result in a "sympathetic" extension to the existing hotel and restaurant to provide a village shop and associated Post Office counter on the ground floor along with additional accommodation on the first floor.

“The proposed extension will join the south-west side of the building ensuring it will not be seen within the context of the local road network," the application stated.

According to the application, the clients' research within the community found there was a "substantial need" for a village shop along with a local Post Office to be located within Llandinam.

Currently the closest shop for the Llandinam community is located in Caersws but there is a weekly pop-up service every Tuesday inside the village hall.

"It is essential in this rural community that local residents and visitors to the area have access to a village shop within walking distance of their residence," the application added.

“The clients would also like to include a Post Office counter within the village shop. Currently the Post Office is located within Llandinam Village Hall, however this service is only open on a Tuesday from 9am to 11am.

"The clients would like the Post Office counter to be open the same hours as the village shop, this will allow residents to have excellent access to this essential service.”

Café closure

The proposal follows the closure of Jo's at The Lion café after 15 months at the popular former pub and hotel.

Joanne Gethin, owner, said the decision to close her "dream" café was a difficult one to make.

"I would like to thank all the customers who have supported me along the way. I would also like to thank my amazing staff for all their hard work and dedication, my suppliers: I C Quality Meats, Sheriffs Wood eggs, Evans' Café, A.W.
