Plans have been submitted to convert flats above a former popular butchers shop in Newtown.

Powys County Council has received a planning application asking for permission to convert space above the former Peter Jacks Butchers in Market Street.

Last month the Post Office confirmed that the premises could be taken over by Newtown's postmistress Tee Rai Thakur and would see the post office move from its current home in Shortbridge Street.

The planning application proposes that the shop front and lower ground floor would still be used as commercial premises.

“We are then looking to convert the remainder into residential premises to be rented out on the open market," said applicant Mr Thakur.

The shop had been the home of Peter Jacks butchers who had been serving Powys for over 40 years.

The plans put forward by letting agents Morris Marshall and Poole on behalf of their clients said a series of works will be needed to convert the building to its proposed new use.

“Previously the whole building was used for the commercial premises for Peter Jacks Family Butchers," the application added.

“The ground floor front was used for the area to sell from, with the rear ground and first floor then used for preparing meats and cold storage.

“The proposal seeks to change the use of the rear of the ground floor and the first floor into two residential units. It also proposes to change the use of the outbuilding to a third residential unit.

“Internally, the full building needs renovating and modernisation. New kitchen and bathrooms are to be installed within the residential units, which can be seen within the detailed floor plans.”

People are being urged to share their views about the proposal to move the Post Office from Shortbridge Street to Market Street by Wednesday, November 20.
