A former Powys primary school is set to be demolished and replaced with new council homes.
The existing Gungrog Church in Wales Nursery and Infant School buildings in Welshpool will be knocked down and replaced with 16 new bungalows.
Demolition work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Powys County Council said the “exciting” plans to build new homes in Welshpool had reached an important milestone.
Councillor Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, said: “I am delighted that our plans to build high quality, energy efficient homes for rent in Welshpool are taking an important step forward.
"Delivering new council homes in Welshpool is a major financial commitment by the council that will help tackle poverty, support the local economy and create opportunities for jobs and training in the community.
“Tackling the housing emergency in Powys is my top priority. This exciting proposal will help us build a stronger, fairer, greener future for our communities."

Bond Demolition are undertaking the works on behalf of the council, which are expected to be completed by late December.
During the demolition period, the area will be an active site with large vehicles requiring access. Local residents are being asked by the council to take extra care when they are in the area.
Gungrog School, along with Ardwyn, Oldford and Maesydre, closed in 2017 before merging as part of the new English-medium Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School.
