Relatives and friends of a Welshpool resident who passed away earlier this year took it upon themselves to continue her work by caring to a town landmark.
Ruth Canning, a Welshpool resident who took responsibility to care and maintain an overlooked historic feature of Welshpool, passed away in July 2024.
Months after her passing at the age of 65, friends and relatives spent the afternoon of October 23 cleaning tidying and replanting at the fountain on Severn Road that Ms Canning often took upon herself to care for.
Ruth was part of a team that helped clean up the fountain back in 2021, removing weeds and washing the stonework as well as planting new bulbs.
At the time, she said: “I have walked past the fountain every day during lockdown but it was starting to look overgrown with weeds, there was litter, I was fed up of seeing it look like that.”
Avril Hart, Dean Fairchild and Martin Canning, Ruth's recently widowed husband spent some time working on the fountain in memory of her birthday on October 31.
Tim Platt, Ruth’s brother, added: “It is hoped that with the renewal of the Newedd Maldwyn home across the road, that the environment of Severn Road can be kept tidy for passers by and tourists entering the town.”
