New plans have been revealed for 10 ‘affordable’ homes to be built in Llanidloes.
Six one-bedroom and four two-bedroom redbrick homes could be built on the former Sandringham Leather Goods site in Eastgate Street, with off road car parking and private gardens for all new properties and a new access road.
The site which is opposite Llanidloes War Memorial Hospital and next to the Huws Gray builder’s merchants is currently owned by Wales’s largest independent furniture store Hafren Furnishers as an overflow warehouse space for storage.

The project is being run by Llanidloes-based developer JJP Services who have been working alongside housing association Barcud which sees the town as a “key area” for supplying affordable, energy efficient, low carbon and lifetime homes.
A statement from Lacey & Owen Architectural Services, on behalf of the developer, said: "Powys County Council housing register were consulted on the original planning application (Jan 2023) to establish the housing need within the Llanidloes area, there has been no building in the town since this date, so we assume that the figures are still relevant.
“The proposed development will provide 10 dwellings of a type and size, that have been identified by both Powys Housing register and Barcud as being required in the local area.

"The site is a brownfield site, currently siting a building which due to its size age, size and location is no longer suitable for commercial use, with the current user not requiring due to other available owned sites within the town.
“There are sufficient alternative commercial properties available within the local area, to warrant the loss of the existing building.”

A proposal was submitted to Powys County Council in 2023 to build eight homes on the site, but it was refused over concerns about road safety including pedestrian footpaths and access, highway layout, and parking provision.
New two-metre pavements are proposed around the new estate as well as relocating an existing street light, electricity pole, waste bin and memorial bench.
Residents were given the chance to have their say for a pre-application, which ended late last month, before the developer submits a full planning application.
