Newtown is on the hunt for a new town councillor after a former mayor stood down.

John Byrne has resigned from his role of representing residents and businesses in the Newtown East area, which includes the town centre, Treowen, New Road and Pool Road areas, on October 28.

His time as councillor included being re-elected as mayor for a second term in May 2023, which he described as a "great honour", adding that he was focussed to improve and enhance what was on offer in Newtown.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has issued a formal notice of the vacancy for the East ward and if 10 electors contact the returning officer by November 14, an election will be held.

Ed Humphreys, council clerk, said: “Your town council, as part of a representative democracy, is composed of the people the community elects to make decisions locally, on its behalf and in its best interests.

"If you have ideas to help, make this community a better place to live, learn, work, or visit, and feel able to persuade others of their benefit over their cost, this is your opportunity.

"However, it’s important to recognise that this opportunity extends beyond simply calling for an election; it is an invitation to consider standing as a town councillor.

"This role offers the chance to actively contribute to your town’s well-being, to represent the diverse voices within your community, and to work collaboratively towards a brighter future for all”.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council paid tribute to Mr Byrne thanking him for the time and effort that he has given to the community in his role as town councillor and Mayor.
