A BELOVED border collie has been praised after assisting in the rescue of a walker who got into difficulties while out wondering in Powys last month.
Flyn was out for a walk with his owner on Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) on Saturday, October 26, when he sniffed out a male walker who had wondered off the main path to take a breather when feeling unwell.
It quickly transpired that the man needed urgent medical assistance and he was airlifted off the mountain, down to safety and taken to hospital by a waiting ambulance.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team said the incident happened on Jacobs Ladder, just below Pen-y-Fan.
“Flyn, a border collie out for a hill walk with his human friend, discovered a gentleman who had moved off the main path to take a rest as he felt unwell,” the team said in a post on its Facebook page.
“His condition had deteriorated and he needed urgent medical assistance.
“The dog walker raised the alarm and with the assistance of another walker and a group of cadets made the gentleman safe and comfortable until the team arrived on scene for medical assistance. Well done to you all for all you did in a difficult situation.
“The casualty was winched and flown to a waiting ambulance by Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter from Newquay for onward transfer to hospital by road.
“Many thanks to the National Trust staff at Pont ar Daff for your access assistance and support from Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team.”

Ashley Miles added: “As one of the walkers who found the chap I can’t fault the mountain rescue and helicopter pilots in very difficult conditions; also the other cadets all came together in hard situations. And Flyn – top dog.”
Cerys Edwards said: “Well done Flyn and all involved in recovering this gent safely to hospital.”
Rescuers also attended another incident on the same day, on their descent from Pen y Fan, assisting a local farmer, who had been involved in an accident on the hill above Llangynidr.
“The gentleman was treated on scene by the team’s remote rescue medical technicians and prepared for winching by the coastguard rescue helicopter from Caernarfon,” said Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.
“The team wishes both casualties a speedy recovery.”
