FIREWORKS fans are in for a treat with a host of events scheduled to entertain across Powys this month.

Fireworks Night is a celebration that combines history, community spirit, and dazzling displays that captivate the hearts of both young and old.

It traces its roots back to the late 16th century. The occasion marks the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, an attempt by a group of Roman Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I.

The plot was foiled, and in celebration of the king’s survival, the public lit bonfires in honour of his safety.

Over time, this evolved into the tradition we see today, where fireworks, bonfires, and effigies of Fawkes are integral elements of the celebration.

These days it is as much about fun, friendship and food as celebrating the grizzly death of Catholic conspirators from centuries ago.

Food stalls offering seasonal treats such as toffee apples, hot chocolate, and the quintessential bonfire snack, jacket potatoes cooked over glowing embers are always popular.

While Fireworks Night is an occasion for joy and celebration, safety is paramount.

Additionally, public awareness campaigns stress the importance of animal welfare during this time and pet owners are advised to keep their animals indoors and provide them with a safe space during the displays.
