Plans for a new windfarm site in north Powys are in the works, with residents and stakeholders in the area being asked for their views.

GALILEO empower is developing plans for Esgair Ddu Energy Park, located north-east of Cwmllinau and to the south of Dinas Mawddwy, and have launched a consultation for people in the area to give their feedback.

The informal consultation on the early-stage plans will take place from Tuesday, October 29 to Tuesday, December 3.

As part of the public consultation, a public meeting will be held on Thursday, November 14, at Cwmllinau Village Hall between 3pm and 7pm, as well as another at Dinas Mawddwy Village Hall on Friday, November 15, between 10am and 2pm.

The proposal includes up to 13 new wind turbines, with planners saying the site has “strong wind resources and rural location” which “make it ideal for renewable energy generation”.

Organisers of the project at GALILEO say the turbines would generate enough energy to supply over 75,000 homes annually and could offset over 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Leslie Walker, Senior Project Manager (Wales) at GALILEO empower, said: “Esgair Ddu Energy Park presents a great opportunity to support the economy of Powys while contributing to the fight against climate change.

“We are excited to working closely with local residents and businesses to ensure this project brings lasting benefits to the area and its community.”

GALILEO empower renewable energy developer, owner and operator that aims to develop green energy projects and currently has a number of them in development in both Wales and Scotland.

Its proposed project at Esgair Ddu Energy Park will also explore options for solar photovoltaic panels and a battery energy storage system, pending further studies.

GALILEO also added that they feel the proposals for Esgair Ddu Energy Park would contribute significantly to Wales’s net-zero goals, while supporting the decarbonisation of heat, power and transport, enhancing energy security and help stabilise electricity prices.

The company is organising a consultation in an effort to engage with the community throughout the planning process which will reportedly shape the development of the proposal.
