Reactions to a fatal train crash that took place on a railway in North Powys have called the collision “incredibly tragic news”.

As the county reacts to a train crash on Monday 21 October, that saw one person die and 15 people taken to hospital as a result, emergency services and politicians have been reacting to the incident.

The collision, the first time a passenger died following a collision on a British railway in four years, was called “incredibly tragic” by Montgomeryshire MP Steve Witherden, who was among the reactions to the crash.

The Labour MP said: "Incredibly tragic news from Llanbrynmair this morning as one fatality has been confirmed overnight. My deepest condolences to the family.

"My thoughts are with them and the 15 people who have been taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. I am very grateful for the response from the emergency services and railway staff last night and today, my thanks to all at the scene.

"Both the track and the A470 remain closed. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will need to attend and inspect the site before Network Rail is able to check that the track is safe to reopen.

"I have heard this could take several days. Whilst the people involved and their families will want answers as soon as possible it is important that we do not speculate and we let the investigation carry out its work. I will be monitoring the situation closely and providing updates."

Mongtomeryshire MS Russell George added that there are “many questions” about the accident but emphasised that allowing investigators to do their work is “important”.

Transport Salaried Staffs Association, an independent trade union for the transport and travel trade industries, also commented on the crash.

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Safety is always the number one priority on our railways and therefore it will be vital to gain a detailed understanding of what happened in this case.
