Against all odds, a cow has given birth to four healthy calves on a dairy farm in Powys.
The bull and three heifers arrived fit and healthy at Calcourt Farms Wernllwyd, located between Berriew and Welshpool, on Wednesday evening, September 25.
Mum and the four little ones are said to be doing "fantastically well" despite the odds of quads being born and surviving to be one in 11 million.
Matthew Hicks, who manages the calving unit at Wernllwyd, said be couldn’t believe his own eyes when he saw the second calver Holstein Friesian cow give birth to the fourth calf.
"We knew she was having twins but when I was doing the rounds at night, I saw two on the floor and one nearly on the floor. I was thinking 'we're going to have to take a look at this' but by that time she spat out number four.
"I was questioning myself, 'am I actually awake?' It was unbelievable, really.
"They're all doing grand. The cow's fine and all of the calves are alive. She's having a little more TLC. The four were not much bigger than the dogs.
"I'd been down to the pub for a meeting about calves actually, but I was sure that I wasn't that drunk! Other than that, I did bugger all. My cow did a bloody amazing job."
Matthew paid tribute to his team including Lee and Jess who did a "fantastic job and did pretty much all of it".
"They've been on four times the feeding and doing that at night too," Matthew said.
"Having quads never happens but those four had to live."
Trefaldwyn Vets said the "miracle quads" were all doing "fantastically well".
"Thanks to mum and a team of very dedicated and knowledgeable calf rearers. Well done, team!"
