A Powys garage and shop has thanked their community after rushing to help them from “vast amount of flood water”.

Mandy Sohal who runs Bronllys garage thanked local farmers and residents after they came to help defend her business from rapidly rising flood waters – which hit her shop twice yesterday (October 16).

According to Mandy, the effect on the shop would have been disastrous if it wasn’t for the repeated help from local residents who came and put in flood defences.

“If it wasn't for the community and as a small family just quickly trying to act together, I don't even know what would have happened,” said Mandy.

“With us it's a reoccurring thing it happens with rain so the community know whenever it's heavy rain to come together to save the shop.”

According to locals in the area the flooding is being made worse by poor drainage in the area which they claim is being made worse by new developments and not being well maintained.

However, after an all-night effort from everyone at the shop they have gone on to be reopened today – despite being hit by what the fire service described as a “vast amount of flood water”.

“We're open as normal, said Mandy. “So we all worked, all eight of us, to get the shop ready for 6.30 in morning. We had 3 staff to help in cleaning.”
