A man who took cocaine and cannabis will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to drug driving in a Powys village.

Carl Emberton, 46, admitted two counts of driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 15.

A drug test found that he had 3.5 microgrammes of cannabis metabolite delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and 56 microgrammes of cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine. The legal limit for both drugs are 2mcgms and 50mcgms respectively.

Prosecutor Helen Tench told the court that PC Bufton stopped a white Ford Transit van in Churchstoke on May 16 after the vehicle left the A489 road without indicating.

The police officer "instantly" smelt cannabis and noted that the former Crew Green man had bloodshot eyes.

"The defendant admitted smoking cannabis in the evening," Mrs Tench added.

Robert Hanratty, defending, said his client accepted that he was over the limit.

"There is quite a bit of personal mitigation over drug use at that time following the breakdown of his marriage," the solicitor said.

"He is living in a caravan at the side of the road now. I won’t say where in case it attracts attention."

Emberton, of no fixed abode, was granted unconditional bail to return to court for his sentencing hearing on November 12.
