A drunk man who threatened people on a night out in Welshpool has been fined in court.

Jonathon Dace, 52, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in the market town's Broad Street on Monday, September 30.

Welshpool Magistrates' Court was told that police were called just after 10pm to find Dace in the middle of the road.

The Montgomery man refused to give his name to officers who noted that Dace was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said: "Asked by police where he lived, the defendant stated 'home'. He was non-compliant and was subsequently arrested."

In mitigation, Robert Hanratty said his client turned to drink to deal with recent personal tragedies.

"Jonathon is the first to admit that he had a drink problem for a significant time," the solicitor said.

"His brother is a victim of a violent attack which has left him in a coma for the last 18 months. Jonathon turned to drink as a coping mechanism. He hasn't drunk since this event."

Probation officer Julian Davies told the court that Dace was sentenced in April to a 12-month community order and a six-month alcohol treatment requirement for threatening behaviour.

Dace's engagement with substance misuse service Kaleidoscope was described as "problematic".

Mr Davies said: "But more recently he has been engaging well and motivated to address these issues."

Dace, of Church Bank, Montgomery, was fined £40 and ordered to pay a £16 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

He said: "I just want to apologise for my behaviour and Kaleidoscope are helping me."

Chair of the magistrates' bench Anthony Jackson replied: "You probably need to focus on your brother."
