One of Llanfyllin’s longest serving firefighters, who has been with the station for more than three decades, has retired.

Firefighter John Kevin Williams has retired from his role in the Mid Wales fire station on Monday, October 14, having worked as a firefighter in Llanfyllin for 33 years.

Mr Williams was presented with a special fireman’s axe with a polished steel head and a plaque to commemorate his last shift at the station, which began in 1991 when Mid and West Wales Fire Service was still known as Powys Fire Service.

Writing on social media, a spokesperson for Llanfyllin Fire Station said: “Firefighter John Kevin Williams (Gerbil) has decided to hang his fire helmet up one last time at M06 Llanfyllin Fire Station.

“Kevin has served at Llanfyllin for 33 years starting with Powys Fire Service and then it changed to Mid and West Wales.

“We would like to wish Kevin and Ruth and their family all the Best for the future, from all the crew at Llanfyllin fire and rescue station.”
