An investigation is under way after a handbag belonging to an 89-year-old charity shop volunteer was stolen from inside the store in Newtown.

The theft from the Powys Animal Welfare shop in Market Street happened sometime between midday and 2pm on Monday, September 30.

The satchel-type bag, containing cash, bank cards and keys, was stolen in a "distraction theft", according to the charity.

Powys Animal Welfare said they were "appalled" by the "absolutely wicked" theft from a woman who has volunteered with the charity for almost 20 years.

"She is so loved by the customers that's why we're all quite distraught.

"It's not about the money, it's about the attitude that they're prepared to do this to an old lady."
