A Newtown woman has walked along a 100-mile stretch of an iconic trek in Scotland for a cause close to her heart.

Nikki Hughes completed the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William over seven days to raise £1,420 for Hector's Greyhound Rescue.

"It was out of this world," Nikki said who will be doing it again next year. "It was taxing and my feet were in bits."

She embarked on the remarkable journey on September 10 to help the charity that rescues and rehomes retired racing greyhounds.

"I’m a big advocate in fostering dogs for a charity in London," Nikki said. "I've had six or seven fosters, but I've failed twice becuase I’ve got two of them."

Nikki's neighbour Tracey Woodland volunteers with Hector's Greyhound Rescue.

She said: "It's absolutely tremendous what she's done. She's been so kind, it's absolutely amazing. We can't thank her enough."

Tracey said the money raised will be a "big boost" for the charity with every penny going to help feed and rehabilitate the greyhounds ready for rehoming. Currently there are around 50 dogs kept at the charity's mid Wales kennels.

"They come from the racing industry and once they’re done racing, they are no longer needed because they’re not making money for trainers or owners," Tracey said.

"The lucky ones will get to a rescue like ours or disposed of; anything can happen to them.

"These dogs just want love, cuddles and a warm bed and a feed," Tracey said. "It's such a wonderful charity going about 20 years now."
