A coffee morning held at a Llanfair Caereinion pub saw the community turn out in large numbers to raise more then £1,000 for charity.
Pubs are not usually packed on a weekday morning, but a coffee morning held on Friday, September 27, at The Red Lion in Llanfair Caereinion saw several residents out in force to support a fundraising initiative for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The fundraiser was organised as a tribute to the pub’s former landlord Tom Williams, who passed away in September 2023 after a short battle with cancer, with his family requesting at the time that any donations given in memory would be gratefully received for Caereinion Medical Centre or Macmillan Nurses.
One year later, the pub hosted the fundraising coffee morning between 10am and 12pm, complete with refreshments, stalls and a prize draw. Organisers said that as many as 60 people were in the pub for the two hours, with all of them donating “generously”.

By the time the event finished, the morning had managed to raise £947, but in the days following as the last minute donations came in, that figure climbed even higher.
In total the event managed to raise £1,115 for the charity that works to raise money to provide vital cancer services, research and campaign to achieve better cancer care, and support the cancer workforce.
Event host Clare Bellison said: “I’m thrilled with the amount of people that came to support the event . It was nice to see the community coming together to enjoy the coffee and cakes and catch up with old friends.
“Everyone knows someone who is fighting cancer or who has lost someone close to them. I try and do something for cancer research or Macmillan annually as many of us have loved ones currently fighting the illness or that have beat it.
“It has also been a year since our a landlord Tom from The Red Lion passed away from his short battle with cancer, so it seemed a fitting tribute to him and his family, who were supported by Macmillan during that very difficult time.
Many locals and businesses donated cakes and prizes for the raffle with over 60 people filling the venue for two hours they all gave generously to the cause helping raise a staggering £1,115 Thank you to everyone that contribute.”
