Machynlleth Town Council will be setting up a parking charge system and banned overnight parking in one of the town’s car parks.

At a town council meeting on Monday, September 30, town councillors in Machynlleth agreed to a number of parking motions concerning the management of council owned car parking spaces at Y Plas.

The motions were raised “in response to its responsibility to minimise the tax burden on Machynlleth residents” and will see overnight parking prohibited without a full year permit, as well as the introduction of a parking charge system for council-controlled spaces in the Plas area.

The motions raised at the meeting were over the area at the back of Plas Machynlleth, locally known as the Old Celtica car park.

The first proposal, raised by Cllr Jeremy Paige, was the stop overnight parking in the area without a full permit and a requirement that vehicles be unoccupied overnight, though it added a few exceptions like would be kept free of charge for cemetery visitors and blue badge holders.

According to the meetings minutes, the motion said: “To prohibit overnight parking without a full year permit in ‘Celtica’ car park. Vehicles to be unoccupied overnight. A daily charge to be made of £3 payable at Y Plas reception.

“Signage to be attached to existing Celtica signs. Spaces to be kept free of charge for cemetery visitors. Funeral directors to reserve spaces for funerals at no cost. Blue badge holders to park for free. Designated disabled spaces to be arranged at nearest point to Y Plas.”

A second motion concerning the car park was then raised by Cllr Ann M MacGarry, proposing to set up a parking charge system within the same car park for all parking areas under the control of the council.

The motion was amended from its original proposal to read: “The system will take into account the needs of staff, tenants, the welfare of the residents at Cwrt David Williams and the requirements of special events at the Plas. The charges will be set by the council and will include long term parking permits.”

Both motions were approved by the council via a majority vote of eight votes for and two against.
