Situated in Llandysilio, near the Wales and England border, sits the "eerie" Grade II listed Calcott Hall, aka Red Dress Manor.

The manor, which dates back to the 18th Century, has been left abandoned for more than 40 years after its previous owner died.

The Grade II listed building has now fallen into a state of disrepair and has become a popular site for urban explorers with many labelling it "eerie" and/or "spooky".

The story behind Red Dress Manor

Calcott Hall is a Georgian-style farmhouse built in the 18th century, sometime around 1725, according to The Urban Explorer.

In 1953 it was awarded Grade II listed status.

The last known owner of the property, Ellen Jones, died in the early 1970s and since then the property has been left abandoned and untouched, left to fall into disrepair.

The Urban Explorer explained: "The Georgian-style farmhouse is in a sorry way and you can see why it was put on the buildings at risk register.

"Every window is broken and frames rotten. Roof tiles are missing and inside many rooms have extremely dangerous floors, and no floor at all in places.

"But it’s this dereliction that gives Calcott Hall its beauty."

The site adds that there is paperwork and photographs scattered over the floors and worktops, as well as a pantry full of food ("all obviously out of date").

While in the basement there are a number of "interesting" items including wooden barrels and a bits of equipment "which hint to Calcott Hall’s farming history".

But its the site in one of the bedrooms which gives the building its spooky name - Red Dress Manor.

Hanging on the wardrobe in one of the bedrooms, next to a bed that still has bedsheets on it, used to be a red dress, which is said to belong to previous owner Ellen Jones.

There is even a photo of her in the dress which is also located in the room.

However, the red dress is said to have been taken, replaced now by a nightie, which drapes in its place over the wardrobe.

Prior to the property going on the market earlier this year (2024), planning permission was approved to renovate the site.

The plans were for the “renovation and reinstatement of the abandoned dwelling” including the “demolition of lean to structure on east elevation and outbuilding”.

The approved plans were also for the “conversion of the barn range to form seven residential units”.
