AN award-winning Powys pub has announced that it is closing – but only for a week, as it is in the process of changing hands.
The Harp at Old Radnor announced on Thursday (October 3) that it will be closing until next Friday, October 11, to allow the new landlords time to settle in.
“The Harp is currently in the process of having new ownership and as a result will be closed from today (Thursday 3rd) until 6pm on 11th October to allow the new landlords to settle in,” the pub said in a post on its Facebook page titled ‘Under New Ownership’.
“Mel and Martin are looking forward to welcoming you back to The Harp with their names above the door very soon.”
The Harp is a lovely old Welsh longhouse inn, perched on a hilltop and offering stunning views of the gorgeous Radnor Valley.
It is often said it boasts one of, if not the best, views from a beer garden in Powys.
And while that is up for debate, its reputation for excellence is not. In 2021 The Harp was named best Powys pub at the National Pub & Bar Awards.
It was one of 94 regional champions from across the UK and from eight areas of Wales, including Gwent, South Glamorgan, Mid Glamorgan, West Glamorgan, Dyfed, Gwynedd and Clwyd.
The other contenders for the Welsh crown were The Hare & Hounds, Aberthin; The Anchor, Tintern; The Old House 1147, Maesteg; Britannia Inn, Swansea; Ty Coch Inn, Gwynedd; The Three Eagles, Llangollen; and The Griffin Dale, Pembrokeshire. The Hare & Hounds went on to take the national title.
In 2020, meanwhile, The Harp was named the Good Pub Guide’s Country Pub of the Year.
