The death of “highly respected” Powys farmer who was crushed by a feed bin has been ruled an accident.

In an inquest at Caernarfon Coroner’s Court it was found Iwan Evans, 78, died after “traumatic injuries” after an animal feed bin fell on him after it was overfilled during a delivery on his family farm in Aberhosan near Machynlleth.

The incident, which took place on February 17 last year, also saw Mr Evans’ son Daffyd also seriously injured.

The Evans family have been described “as a highly respected family” and “one of the region’s oldest family names” and the accident left the local community in shock.

Dyfed-Powys Police and investigators from the Health and Safety Executive were also called to the scene on the night of the accident.

OTHER NEWS:

In the opening hearing last year, it was reported that Mr Evans had been standing underneath the bin, while his son Daffyd was standing to the right of the bin, as the contents hit him with force and knocked him face down.

The delivery driver tried to remove the bin from Mr Evans and his son, using a farm vehicle and chains.

The driver then ran a short distance to the farmhouse, alerting Mr Evans’ wife who contacted the emergency services.

Crews arrived on the scene and carried out CPR before pronouncing Mr Evans deceased at the scene at 6.24pm.

What happens at an inquest and what can the press report?

Reporting on inquests is one of the most difficult jobs faced by any journalist, but there are important reasons why local newspapers attend coroner’s court hearings and report on proceedings.

Here we will try and answer some of your questions about what will happen, what can be reported and why.

According to reports Mr Evans and his son “had built the flat-packed feed bin together and believed they had followed all the correct instructions”.

However the concrete foundations reportedly crumbled when 4.4 tonnes of feed was added to the bin, exceeding its 3.5-tonne weight limit.

In the report coroner for north-west Wales, Kate Robertson, ruled that the death had been accidental.

In her judgement Ms Roberts said: “Iwan Llwyd Wynne Evans died on 17 February 2023 at Cleiria Isaf, Aberhosan, Machynlleth when an animal feed bin which was being filled with feed was overfilled, it fell and led to traumatic injuries being sustained by Iwan Llwyd Wynne Evans.”
