A MAJOR road through Powys that was closed following a late night fire involving a coach is to remain closed until further notice.

The A470 between Libanus and Brecon was shut following a vehicle fire in the early hours of Sunday morning, September 29.

Traffic Wales said over the weekend that the road would be closed until Monday, but has now confirmed this morning that the closure will be in force until further notice.

“Due to damage to the road surface, the road will remain closed in both directions until further notice,” Traffic Wales tweeted at 10.55am.

Brecon Fire Station posted a dramatic photo on its Facebook page on Sunday morning, capturing an image of the vehicle ablaze in the early hours.

“At 1am this morning, crews were sleeping soundly. Ten minutes later we were putting our training to good use on the A470, with support from our colleagues from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service,” said the station in the post.

The station reported the incident involved a 50-seater coach that was “well alight”. Equipment used by firefighters included a bowser, thermal camera, two pumps, two hose reel jets and three breathing apparatus teams.

“Thankfully, all passengers were accounted for,” added the station.

“Recovery of the coach and the resurfacing could take a while, so keep an eye on the Dyfed-Powys Police socials for updates.”

It is understood that the coach contained members of a male voice choir from Cardiff, who had been in the Powys area on Saturday night, attending the 72nd Llanwrtyd Eisteddfod, in Llanwrtyd Wells, where they had won an award.
