A cash point could return to Welshpool’s high street as the banking hub’s bid to have one installed has been approved by Powys County Council.

An application for planning permission to install a new ATM at Welshpool’s Banking Hub on Broad Street has been approved by Powys County Council after a lengthy wait for the facility to be installed.

The application was approved on September 26 and could mean the end of a lengthy wait for Welshpool residents who have been hoping to see a cash point on Welshpool’s high street again since the hub first opened in December 2023.

The application was seeking planning permission to display of 'Banking Hub' branding and a logo alongside bilingual ATM surround signage and an ATM itself.

The application addressed some of the details regarding the cash point and surrounding signage, saying: “The ATM is to be re-installed in an existing opening where one had previously been provided on the front elevation.

“The signage is consistent with the existing Banking Hub signage present on the property in terms of design and appearance. It is of a modest size and typical of the type of signage used for ATMs.”

In their delegated report, Powys County Council added: “It is considered that the proposed development fundamentally complies with relevant planning policy and therefore the recommendation is one of conditional consent.”

Progress on the hub’s proposed developments, such as installing the ATM and improving disabled access at the front entrance, has been criticised by town councillors in the months since it opened.

At a town council meeting in September, councillors discussed another application from the hub to create ramp at the front of the building.

While disabled access to the hub - which opened in December last year - is in development, a change in regulations means that the planned ramp must be widened slightly, further delaying the process of installing it.

Cllr Phil Owen said: “I met with CashAccessUK a while back and subject to the necessary planning approval they were hopeful that all the work, for the access ramp and cashpoint, would be completed by Christmas.”

Cllr Nick Howells was more critical, saying: “The pre-planning of hub has been disastrous as far as disabled access is concerned.”
