Newtown has a new husband and wife duo as mayor and deputy mayor following the sudden resignation of Mike Childs.
Councillor Pete Lewington said he was "very pleased, delighted and honoured" after being elected mayor unopposed, alongside deputy mayor Councillor Margaret Lewington on Monday (September 23).
The town and county councillor paid tribute to his predecessor Mike Childs, who stepped down in early September, for his many years' service to Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council.
The Mayor said: "I can promise you all that I will undertake the role with pride and enthusiasm and do my utmost to keep the office in the high esteem it is currently held.

"Equally I am saddened by the circumstances in which this vacancy has arisen, and I would also like to pay tribute to Mike Childs not only for his time as mayor but also for his many years’ service to the council, chair of committee, deputy and mayor.
"I’d also like my fellow councillors not only to thank Mike but to send him and his family their best wishes at such a difficult time for them."
At least 10 Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn residents have until Tuesday, October 1, to call for a town councillor election for the west ward following Mr Childs resignation.
Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, said: "Your town council, as part of a representative democracy, is composed of the people the community elects to make decisions locally, on its behalf and in its best interests.
