Welshpool is set to travel back in time this weekend with its 1940s celebration.

The town will host a variety of events from September 27 to 29, marking the culmination of a year of fundraising and promotional activities by an eight-member committee.

The weekend will kick off with a 'Salute the Forties' variety show at 2pm in the town hall, followed by a dance at COWSHACC featuring the Swing Commanders at 8pm.

The Seven Stars car park, behind the town hall, will be transformed, with military stalls and a static display of a full-size Spitfire aeroplane, as well as other military vehicles.

It is important to note that the car park will be closed to public parking after 6pm on Friday.

A parade, led by the Knighton Silver Band, will leave the Royal Oak at 11am, escorting the mayor and special guests from the television comedy series 'Allo Allo' to the town hall.

The parade will also include a procession of vehicles around the town at 2.30pm.

The band will perform two 30-minute slots upstairs in the town hall.

Broad Street and High Street will be closed from 8am until 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday, and will feature military and civilian vehicles, working horses, stalls, and the main entertainment stage.

There will also be a weapon firing demonstration on both days at 2pm.

This is expected to be very noisy, so those with a nervous disposition, vulnerable children, or dogs are advised to take caution.

The New Street Church will host a Narnia exhibition from 10am on Saturday.

Upstairs in the town hall, there will be stalls, displays, and the chance to meet the 'Allo Allo' cast members, who will be doing a question and answer session each day at 3pm.

Author Natalie Cummings will be signing copies of her book 'The Fiddle' and giving a talk at 1.30pm on both days.

Saturday evening will see the return of the Ashby Little Big Band and guests in the town hall, with Bertie Blighty entertaining in the Baytree.

A vintage double-decker bus will operate an hourly service from the bus station in Church Street car park on both Saturday and Sunday, on the hour every hour from 10am, excluding 1pm.

This will call at Raven Square, Andrews Fish Bar, Welshpool Airport, and back to the bus station.

Tickets for the variety show, Swing Commanders, and Blitz Ball are available from Welshpool Jewellers, Riffels, or online via the Welshpool 1940s website, or on the door.
