A Powys man will be sentenced by a crown court judge after he admitted assaulting a man and a woman.

Brandon Owen-Wood, 30, was told by Judge Jeremy Jenkins that he must remain in prison until his next court appearance on Friday, October 11.

He initially denied assaulting Martin Gregory James by occasioning actual bodily harm and assaulting Rachel Hince by beating her on September 24, 2023.

Owen-Wood appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday (September 20) without representation despite the judge giving him more than two weeks to find a solicitor or barrister after he wanted to change his plea from guilty back to not guilty.

The defendant told the judge that he spoke with a legal representative that morning and was under the impression that he would be represented in court for the hearing.

He said: “I’ve done what you’ve asked your honour. Please I beg you, like."

The prosecuting barrister told the court that a firm was not able to represent Owen-Wood because there would be a conflict if they were to do so.

The judge said: "You changed your plea to guilty and now you want to change it back and I’ve given you an opportunity through your solicitor, barrister or yourself and you haven’t.

"I’m going to remand you in custody to October 11 until you are sentenced."

Owen-Wood shouted from the dock, "You've set me up to fail! I am not guilty! They’re taking the p**s!" He continued to turn the air blue as he was taken to the cells.

As Owen-Wood was led to the cells, the judge responded: "There’s a thing that’s called contempt of court, do you know that?"
