Extra night time police patrols have been launched in rural communities including two Powys villages as part of an operation to tackle rural crime.

It follows recent reports of burglaries targeting properties in rural areas in north Powys and south Gwynedd.

Patrols have so far been conducted by North Wales Police in the Powys villages of Llanwrin and Esgairgeiliog Ceinws, near Machynlleth, as well as Dinas Mawddwy, Corris and Dolgellau.

Operation Mantel aims to provide a visible police presence to reassure communities and intercept rural crime.

PC Gina Cinderby said: “As the evenings become darker once again, we are reminding rural communities to be vigilant and report suspicious activity.

“Ensure all valuables are locked away and keep keys in a separate secure location.

“Installing CCTV and motion sensor lights can also deter thieves from targeting a property.”

North Wales Police officers are partnering with communities and businesses as part of their We Don’t Buy Crime initiative to minimise crime, and catch and convict offenders who profit from what is known as  ‘acquisitive crime’, such as burglary, robbery, theft, and vehicle crime.

"We understand the impact these types of offences can have on individuals, communities, and businesses," North Wales Police added.
