Plans have been submitted to create a new doctor’s surgery in Newtown town centre.
Powys County Council have received plans to create a new doctor’s surgery in Newtown at the former headquarters of Laura Ashley.
The plans would see a new surgery at St David’s House on New Road which would see the relocation of the current Ladywell Surgery based in the Ladywell Shopping Centre.
The plans would not see any changes being made to the main Montgomery Surgery.
In the planning statement submitted by Bleazard & Galletta LLP on behalf of the surgery it claims that the plans would see “an increased number of consultation rooms will be formed along with other facilities which will improve the Primary Healthcare Provision in Newtown.”

They added: “The proposal has the support of the Welsh Health Board.
“The building use is currently B1 Business Use, the change of use relates to part of the ground floor and will extend to 260 square metres providing five consultation rooms, waiting room, reception and staff facilities.
“There is not a pharmacy proposed but a dispensary which will be served from the Practices’ other facility in Montgomery.”

According to the plans the proposals have come bout due to public feedback - “The Place Plan for Newtown published in 2021 based on public consultation identified a need for an increase in GPs, the expansion of the existing GP provision in Newtown will provide additional services.”
The plans also claim there will be “no external alterations to the building”.
They also argue the site will have good transport links with parking provided for staff with disabled parking provision for patients.
The plans add that there will be “Seven onsite dedicated parking spaces will be provided, as the building is in the town centre (Zone one)
“Offsite parking is available within walking distance. There are local bus services, the building is also located within walking distance of the railway station.”
